| Previous Hispanola: On March 20, 1997 archaeologists find the remains of a city of thousands that may have existed after the discovery of Hispanola in 1493. Three large ceremonial plazas lined with five foot tall limestone blocks are the center of the city whose destruction may have been described in 1503 by Bartolome de Las Casas. Scuba divers retrieve carved wooden axes and ornate pottery from a well that were probably part of a sacrificial ceremony. The site called La Aleta is similar to others found on large islands of the Caribbean and attributed to the Taino Indians. The Taino Indians introduced the Spanish invaders to hammocks and are the origin of the word barbecue. South America & Caribbean:Events of this year in this region influencing Louisiana. |

In October of 1997 another New Orleans institution ends when the landmark Krauss Department store is closed. The store first opened its doors in 1903 at 1201 Canal Street by Leon Fellman and his nephews the Krauss brothers Max Alfred, Leopold and Fritz. The store survived into the 1990s by stocking obscure items not available in large chains and by refusing to reduce service to its loyal New Orleans customers. It was a monument to the old fasion way of duing business and proud of it.It was one of the first stores to hire and sell to African Americans. |
