In March of 1995, John G. Schwegmann who started Schwegmann Brothers Giant Super Markets with his brothers in 1946 dies.

Mike Foster, the grandson of a governor, rises from obscurity to win governorship. Edwin Edwards, although eligible to run for another term, has retired from politics. Also making the run-off is Cleo Fields, U. S. Representative from the controversial fourth district that has been gerrymandered to create a second black representative for Louisiana. Melinda Schwegmann, finishes a disappointing sixth in her bid to become Governor of Louisiana. Mayor Marc Morial declares New Orleans International Airport to be the only airport planned for South east Louisiana and refuses to endorse the Louisiana Airport Authority. Schwegmann Brothers Giant Super Markets, in its largest expansion yet adds 28 National Tea Co. stores to its 18 locations in June of 1995, and almost immediately runs into financial trouble. The New Orleans Museum of Art hosts a Monet exhibit this year, drawing over 100,000 visitors a month.
