New Orleans International Airport requests an extension of a runway 1,272 feet into St. Charles Parish wetlands to accommodate larger planes and reduce jet noise over neighborhoods. Godchaux÷s Department Store which has sold clothes, jewelry and toys on Canal Street since 1840 closes its doors in 1986 as Canal street begins to decline as one of the nation÷s last downtown shopping areas.
