Pat OBrien dies at 89 years of age on November 10, 1983. He had served in World War I in the Rainbow Division earning a Purple Heart. In the 1920s he was a tobacco salesman in Texas and also sold stocks and bonds until the crash of 1929. He opened a package liquor store at 638 St. Peter St. in 1933 only seven months after the repeal of prohibition. With Charlie Cantrell he opens his famous bar at 718 St. Peter St. in December of 1944. |

| Edwards elected to a third term beating Treen by 415,000 votes. This term is clouded by two trials for alleged fraud in a hospital and nursing home moratorium that benefited some of his supporters. The first trial ended in a hung jury, the second in acquittal. | The Regional Transit Authority is created and takes over the ownership of the St. Charles Streetcar line. | January 1 Sugar Bowl: Penn State wins national championship defeating Georgia 27-23. Louisiana-born Hal Sutton captures the PGA Championship. Nebraska defeats Louisiana State 21-20 in this year's Orange Bowl. |
