The twenty eighth Republican national convention meets in San Francisco to nominate Barry Goldwater. Margaret Chase Smith is first woman placed into nomination for president.

John McKeithen re-elected governor. J. Ray McDermott & Co. headquarters move to New Orleans in 1964 from Houston. In 1923 R. Thomas McDermott and his father J. Ray McDermott won a contract to build 50 wooden drilling rigs for an east Texas wildcatter. In 1980 the company is renamed McDermott Inc. and in 1983 it becomes McDermott International. St. Augustine High School celebrates as one of its graduates is the first Presidential Scholar in Louisiana. Another student wins first prize in the Tulane University Science Fair after a legal battle.
