About 4 a.m. on October 20, a Norwegian tanker, the Boheme is struck by a barge in the Mississippi River near Lutcher. The ship immediately catches fire, killing 20 Norwegian sailors caught in decks below.

The Times Picayune Company is bought by Samuel I. Newhouse who already owns 17 successful newspapers around the nation.
St. Augustine High School serves as a headquarters for successful efforts to integrate New Orleans businesses. Louisiana State defeats Colorado 25-7 in this year's Orange Bowl.
