Mississippi River Bridge in downtown New Orleans opens providing quick access to the West Bank and adding Pontchartrain Expressway to I-10. The Times Picayune Company buys the New Orleans Item and merges it with the afternoon States to form the States-Itemand complete the consolidation of all the city’s dailies.. Louisiana State wins the National Championship in football with a 11-0 football season. LSUNO opens in New Orleans providing a low-cost local alternative to Tulane and Loyola.
St. Augustine High School celebratesas one of its graduates is the first black student to win a National Merit Scholarship in the South.
The cast of The Horse Soldiers including John Wayne, William Holden and Constance Towers use Oaklawn Plantation, near Natchitoches, as a location. In the true story Col. Benjamin Grierson and his troops left Tennessee and cross confederate Mississippi to sabotage a railroad depot that supplied the besieged town of Vicksburg. Butterfly McQueen also stars.
