State Highway engineer Harry S. Henderlite announces a highway to be built between Golden Meadow and Grand Isle. The only alternate route to the popular off-shore resort is from Lafitte, but the cost is prohibitive. When taking the route through Raceland the mileage from New Orleans is 100 miles. |

Boswell Sisters and Louis Prima Trumpeter Buddy Boldin dies. |
The Sam Zemurray and his wife create Zemurry Gardens and Lodge in the 1930s aided by gardener Howard Schilling. The property will be acquired by the Reimers-Schneider Trust in 1974. Joiner family settled there c. 1800. Later called Mount Hennen, Morris Retreat, Houltonwood. | Governor Huey Long creates the Louisiana State University Medical School in New Orleans and names as its dean Dr. Arthur Vidrine of Ville Platte, whom he had already named superintendent of Charity Hospital. Some said he was getting revenge on Tulane University for refusing to give him an honorary degree. | At 36 George "Red" Reyer (1895-1979) is named police superintendent of New Orleans. He is one of the youngest police chiefs in the nation and is considered a natural born policeman, a fair man with a long memory and an iron nerve and a sixth sense by which he seemed able to read a criminals mind. He had joined the police force in 1916 after a brief stint as a streetcar conductor. By 1925 he was detective captain, 1928, night supervisor, 1930 chief of detectives and the next year police superintendent. There was little organized crime under his watch. He was forced into retirement by political pressure in 1946 when De Lesseps "Chep" Morrison succeeds Robert Maestri as mayor. He is offered jobs in many distant communities but decides to stay in New Orleans. |
