Wedell-Williams Air Service formed by Harry Williams(1889-1936, heir to a lumber fortune and James R. ³Jimmy² Wedell. They were based at Patterson Airport in St. Mary s Parish which is now the Williams Memorial Airport. The pair quickly succeeds with service between New Orleans and Shreveport, St. Louis and Dallas. Next they will add a contract for Airmail to Houston. There success allows them to try the more competitive aspects of aviation. and they set many records in Wedell designed and built planes including the Bendix Trophy and the Thompson Trophy Race in Cleveland (1933). Jimmy Wedell dies in a plane crash on June 24, 1934 and Harry Williams dies in a crash on May 19, 1936. The air service is sold to Captain Edward Rickenbacker who will merge it with other airlines to create Eastern Airlines. |
