Beginning in May and lasting for 18 months the city is terrorized by an ax murderer. Four of the five killed were Italian grocers, seven others are wounded. No motive is ever established because nothing was ever stolen. The Times-Picayune received a letter from the Axeman that said the killer would strike at 12:15 a.m. on St. Joseph's day, but would pass any house that was playing jazz music. The city was jumping with jazz that night, but the axeman did not strike. He killed two more times after that night but was never caught. |
