February 8, 1898 to May 12, 1898; A state constitutional convention is held.
The February 15, 1898 explosion of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana harbor and the following war with Spain are the result of a complex mixture of events and tabloid journalism. The Hearst newspapers help to fan the enthusiasm and sympathy of the American public, but President McKinley and the Spanish crown do not share the zeal for the Spanish American War.

By May 26 the 1st and 2nd Louisiana Volunteer Infantry regiments, including many aged Confederate veterans, have been formed at Camp Foster located at the Fair Grounds. They arrive in Cuba on December 24 after hostilities have concluded.
New Orleanian Joseph Numa Augustin, a 24 year old graduate of West Point was one of 365 men killed in the war. Eventually more than 2,000 deaths were attributed to yellow fever in Cuba.
Two more regiments from Louisiana, called immunes because they had already survived yellow fever, were mustered and saw occupation duty in Cuba.

On July 4, 1898 the French steamer La Bourgogne collides with the iron sailing ship the Cromartyshire in heavy seas. Only 163 of the 725 passengers aboard the steamer and only one of the nearly 300 women aboard are saved. Ten Orleanians, mostly women were aboard when it goes down 100 miles from Halifax Nova Scotia.
The wills of two women Mrs. Pauline Costa Langles and her daughter Angele Marie of 331 N. Rampart, went to the supreme Court of Louisiana to determine which had died first. The Courts decided for the daughter who had instructed that a tomb be built. In their memory a 30 foot Egyptian obelisk with her name and the number of the court decision stands in Metairie Cemetery.
Another memorial, also empty, memorializes a Mrs. Jules Aldige of 1423 Esplanade, her daughter and grand daughter with marble angles clasping each other over an anchor.

The Constitution now grandfathers in illiterate whites whose father or grandfather registered to vote in 1867. It also bars Murphy James Foster for running for a third consecutive term. Black voters are virtually disenfranchised through legislative shenanigans.
Drummer Arthur James Zutty Singleton is born in Bunkie, La. Drummer Warren Baby Doddsis born. Leon J. Fremaux dies. This Civil War colonel of engineers will be best remembered for his sketches of French Quarter street vendors such as Zozo La Brique, and Yoy the kite maker who fashioned the toys from discarded cypress barrel staves using only his thumb nails. His sketches will be published in a limited edition by his grandson in 1949.
