George Washington Cable (1844-1925) is born in October of 1844 at the family home on Annunciation Square. When George was still young his father lost most of his money when two steamboats he had invested in burned and sank on the river. The elder Cable sent his family north with relatives until he could recoup his fortune. He died soon after from a fall. While working a clerks job young Cable saw the Union ships coming up the river and slipped out of town to join a Confederate cavalry regiment. He was wounded and returned to his clerks job. While there, his anonymous contributions to the Picayune leads to a reporters job and eventual fame as a writer. |
