| Town of Carrollton and Faubourg Bouligny are laid out by Charles F. Zimpel in 1833 on site of the Macarty Plantation, formerly the uppermost part of Bienville’s 1719 land grant. It becomes a town in 1845, and Jefferson Parish seat 1852-1874. Annexed 1874 by New Orleans. 1854 courthouse designed by Henry Howard. | The City of Lafayette (Felicity Street to Plaisance St.) incorporated. It will be the seat of Jefferson Parish until annexed by New Orleans in 1852. | The row of townhouses found on the 600 block of Julia Street are completed. Captain Henry Miller Shreve came to the Red River in 1833 to remove the log jam 165 miles long, extending from Loggy Bayou to Hurricane Bluffs; the removal of the raft by 1837 opened the Red River to navigation and made Shreveport an important center of trade and gateway to the West. | Dr. Joseph Jones (1833-1896), a native of Georgia, will be the president of the Louisiana State Board of Health and the Louisiana State Medical Society during the 1880s. He will be a professor of chemistry and clinical medicine at the University of Louisiana (now Tulane University) and visiting physician at Charity Hospital from 1868 through 1894. John McEnery |
