Evangeline by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow will immortalize the tragedy of the Acadian exile from Nova Scotia in 1755. The łEvangeline Oak˛ in St. Martinsville marks the legendary meeting place of Emmeline Labiche and Louis Arceneaux, The counterparts of Evangeline and Gabriel. In 1755 both sides of the river above the German Coast in St, John the Baptist Parish is settled by newly arrived Acadians giving it the title łthe Acadian Coast.˛ A plan of New Orleans by M. Thierry does not show that Conde is closed at the convent. Also at this time Hospital (L'Arcenal in earlier maps) is also closed at Conde making a large block of four squares that exists for many years. Thierry's map does show the new Government house on Levee (Decatur) between Iberville and Bienville and a new Intendance on Levee between St. Louis and Toulouse, which is a private residence rented from Jean Baptiste Prevost by Intendant Michel in 1749. This map also shows two cemeteries in the city which are misplaced.
