South America & Caribbean:A fleet of Spanish ships filled with silver and gold sinks off the Florida Keys.
North America:Savannah, Georgia is the first settlement of the new colony, which becomes an asylum for debtors.
Europe: France ends a period of peace when it is involved in the War of Polish succession, siding with Stanislas, father of the French Queen. He loses but is ceded the Duchy of Lorraine which is incorporated into France on his death in 1766. The textile industry in England is helped by the invention of the flying shuttle for hand looms. Theatre by Voltaire and Pierre de Marivaux; opera by Jean Rameau; music by J. S. Bach; poetry by Alexander Pope, painting by William Hofarth
