South America & Caribbean:As a part of the War of Spanish Succession French forces over-run Rio de Janero and Britain's Portuguese allies.
North America:British troops and colonial forces invade Canada by sea but are crushed by French forces. 200 British colonists in Carolina are massacred by Tuscorora warriors.
Europe: Holy Roman Emperor Josef I dies and his brother Charles VI takes up the Habsburg end of the War of Spanish Succession. The Black Plague kills over half a million in Vienna and Brandenburg. Poetry by Alexander Pope, opera by Handel.
January 1711
Father Hidalgo in Texas writes three letters to governor Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac of the Louisiana colony in Mobile. Only one letter arrives. It says that the Spansh government would not support his mission and invited the French to trade there.
In response Louis Juchereau de St. Denis later leads a party of two dozen Frenchmen and as many Indians to establish an outpost at Natchitoches.

A Boeuf Gras Society is formed in Mobile as Carnival is celebrated in the early capital of the Louisiana colony.
