John McEnery, 1833-1891

Born in Petersburg, Virginia. Son of Henry O’Neil McEnery and Caroline H. Douglas.
1835
Moves with family to Monroe, Louisiana. His education includes Hanover College in Indiana and a law degree from the University of Louisiana (Tulane)
1856
Marries Mary G. Thompson of Monroe.
1857
Appointed as registrar at the State Land Office in Monroe by President Buchanan while serving on the Ouachita Parish Police Jury.
1862
March
Serving as a Captain of Company B, Fourth Battalion of the Louisiana Infantry.
1862

Promoted to Major
1862
Fights in Virginia and the Carolinas as a Lt. Col.
1865
Elected a judge in the Twelvth Judicial District of Louisiana, but never served.
1866
Elected to the state legislature.
1867
Thrown out of the state legislature by General Sherman.
1872
Candidate for Governor from both the Democrat and Liberal parties against William Pitt Kellogg
1873
Although the State Returning Board, controlled by Republican Henry C. Warmoth is now supporting Democrat McEnery, a new board is organized by Grant to clean up Louisiana politics.

Both William Pitt Kellogg and McEnery claim victory, backed by their respective returning boards and are inaugurated by two separate legislatures.
1874
President Grant’s executive order names William Pitt Kellogg as the winner.Thrown out of the state legislature by General Sherman.
1891
March 28
Dies in Washington D. C. Since his withdrawal from Louisiana politics he has practiced law in New Orleans.
