When the Territory of Orleans is divided into counties the present-day St. Mary Parish is part of Attakapas County
1811

A territorial act divides the county of Attakapas into two parishes: The parish of St. Martin and the parish of St. Mary - The parish of St. Martin shall contain all that part of the country north, or above a line running east from the upper line of the plantation of Francisco Boutte, on the Bayou Teche, to the great lake, and west from the said Francisco Boutte to the mouth of the petite Anse on the Bay; and the parish of St. Mary shall contain all the remainder of the county, that is to say, all that is south or below the said line.
1825
Enterprise Plantation, in St. Mary Parish is established by Pierre Simeon Patout in 1825. Originally intended as a vineyard, the plantation was converted to sugar cane. It is the oldest complete working sugar cane plantation in the United States.
1849
January 12
Murphy James Foster is born near Franklin. This prominent St. Mary Parish plantation owner and lawyer of the reconstruction period will serve the people of Louisiana as: Louisiana State Senator (1880-1892) Thirty-first Governor (1892-1900) United States Senator (1900-1912).
