Chew is named as one of the executors in a will of Daniel Clark. This will becomes the center of a controversy in 1834 when Clark's daughter Myra Clark Gaines sues Relf and Chew. |

The firm of Relf and Chew is in financial trouble due to interruptions in commerce by the War of 1812. Chew serves as a sargeant in Captain Beale's Company of Riflemen in the Louisiana militia. |

Chew is serving in the New Orleans Customhouse as a customs collector. He later becomes postmaster of New Orleans. |
