| A major portion of this square was sold at public auction to Joseph (Jose) Deville Degoutin (Bellechasse) on Feb. 26,1795 from succession sale of Pedro Carlos Petroux. Colonel Bellechasse sold off the land in small lots over several years. This sale includes Lots 23043; 23049, [Lot A]; 23050-01 [Lot 11]; 23051-01, [Lot 12]; 23051-01 [Lot 13]; 23052-01; 23052-02, [Lot 17]; 23053 [Lot C]; 23054, [Lot 17]; 23055; 23056; 23057; 23058; 23059; 23060(3-4-5); 23061; 23062; and PT7. Josefa de St. Maxent Osorno who bought the largest lot was the daughter of Colonel Gilberto Antonio St. Maxent, a military engineer who had a business partnership with Pierre Leclede, founder of St. Louis. These two men along with Chouteau had a monopoly on the fur trade in the Missouri region during the Spanish Era (1868-1803). Josefas sisters married Louisiana Governors Bernardo Galvez and Don Luis de Unzaga. The local branch of this family lives on this square until 1878. |
A large portion of this square is a playground named Cabrini Park The space was for many years occupied by the public school McDonough #15. It stood here until the present McDonough #15 was built on St. Philip Street. Many buildings were demolished in 1939 to clear more space for the park.
One house on this square, that at the present address 919 Governor Nicholls Street may be the oldest house in the French Quarter. After construction and legal difficulties this house was finished in 1784, four years before the first great fire of the Spanish era. It stands today on the same brick walls with a gabled roof that has replaced the hipped roof of the colonial style.
