Parish Info

The City of Westwego was originally called Salaville after Pablo Sala who owned the land in the late 19th century. After the Cheniere Caminada hurricane in 1893 he donated much of the area to victims of the storm. The village of Westwego was incorporated in 1919 and was designated a city in 1951. From a small fishing village Westwego has grown into a city of many diversified industries.

One of the many tales of how Westwego got its name is that the trainmen, who lived in New Orleans crossed the river on a barge ferry, and at this site boarded their trains operated by the Frisco Railroad line. As they left the area their familiar slogan was ³West we go², thus giving the village its name.
