The parish seat, St Joseph derived its name from a nearby lake. A Jesuit Priest traveling with early explorers gave the names of saints to lake in the area. The town began as Densmore"s landing with a house and a store where early river travelers stopped to replenish themselves on their way to New Orleans. St. Joseph became a village in 1901 and was incorporated as a town on March 3, 1903
1843 - Tensas Parish is created with St. Joseph as the parish seat. Rare example, for deep south, of a town planned and constructed around New England style village green. Historic district listed on National Register of Historic Places.
