This village was first settled in 1815 by English-speaking pioneers from the Florida Parishes across the Mississippi River. They named it after the many wild roses found in the area.

The first post office was established in 1857 and a railroad was built through from Baton Rouge to Opelousas two years later. The Rosedale Road to the north was used by Union troops to and from the ill-fated Red River campaign during the Civil War.
