The town of Newellton was settled by the Rouths in the early 19th century. It is named, however, after Edward and Thomas Newell who owned land in the area and invented a cotton press that contributed substantially to the economic advantage of the town. Newellton was incorporated as a village in 1904 and was designated a town on April 4, 1951.
