Parish Info

Montgomery was originally the site of a Spanish trading post established in 1719 and called Bon Dieu Falls. The stream flowing through the site was then called Rigolette De Bon Dieu or Circular Channel of the Good God. In 1832 the Red River cut a new path through a bayou further upstream, leaving Natchitoches isolated and washing out a more direct course toward Colfax.

In 1840, General Thomas S. Woodward, a veteran of the Indian Campaigns of the U. S. Army, purchased a tract of land here and called it Creola Bluffs after a Cherokee princess with whom he had fallen in love.
