Parish Info

In 1835 Charles Veeder selected a high, spring-fed site and laid out a town grid in the shape of a parallelogram. His hope was the huge Natchitoches Parish would be divided and site would be chosen as the seat of the parish government. Overton, established in 1821 on nearby Bayou Dorcheat Bayou became the parish seat of Claiborne parish and Veeder"s store and inn in Minden prospered until he left for California in 1849. When Webster Parish was created from Claiborne Parish in 1871 Minden finally became parish seat.
