Grosse Tete, which means big head in French, began as the Bay Farm Plantation, a 22 acre farm that went bankrupt after the Civil War. The town was first incorporated in 1906 and reincorporated in 1952.
The Grosse Tete Bayou was, for over half a century, a highway, bringing supplies to the area"s farmers and taking the sugarcane and other crops to markets and refineries down the Mississippi through Plaquemine Bayou.
