Parish Info

The Missouri Pacific Railroad was built through this area in 1891 by Jay Gould and was named the Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad. A depot and section house was built about every five miles along the track, each one having a name. The one at Georgetown was named after Gould’s son, George, although there is an interesting legend of it being named after hobo George.

The Louisiana and Arkansas Railroad was built in 1901 making Georgetown a crossroads for railroads and highways. This location along so many transportation routes has helped it to survive long after other sawmill towns in the area have disappeared.
