Clarks at one time was the largest town in the parish, but when the Central Louisiana Lumber Company suspended operations in 1953, it sustained a loss of residents and is now an incorporated village of some 800 people, to whom the company sold homes and gave the utilities to the town. Smaller mills in various parts of the parish have enlarged their operations to care for the needs of the lumbering industry, and tree crops being grown for railway ties, pulp wood, piling, poles and posts are being cared for by local interests supplying the outside market in these items.
