This page may eventually be for FAQ's or a search engine, but for now I will use it to explain development and keep the links well rounded.

I would like to think that with this publication I can inspire people to create by giving them a window into our culture. The creators I hope to inspire will be students of all ages, writers and artists who do not yet know their talents and business creators who do not yet know their business.

I believe that there is wealth to be made from our culture and any person who wants to, can participate in this prosperity.

Throughout its history Louisiana has lured and nurtured many creative personalities be they revolutionaries or writers or rascals.

My desire may be inspired by a childhood experience of Europe where every burg and hamlet seemed to have a unique and interesting claim to fame. Where ever I went,
About the Publisher

Isn't fun the best thing to have?

artisans were forever creating new objects that reflected their culture and were selling them to tourists.

However I do not want to create a publication that ignores the reality of twenty-first century business. If creative people are to realize the dream of turning a skill into an income or an idea into an industry they must know the pros and cons of devoting their lives to a business. They must have access to the resources to turn words into actions.

Woven into these pages will be threads that will connect the casual browser to government, business and educational opportunities.

I also expect to invite ideas and active participation through whatever means that current electronic technology provides.

At this moment Encyclopedia Louisiana is a part time avocation and a minor investment of money, a small step beyond a glimer in my eye. I hope that visitors will help me turn this idea into a perpetual resource for everyone, by becoming a contributor, a donor, a sponsor, a participant. If not, I hope each visitor will at least enjoy what this publication has to offer.

Barnes and Noble Affiliation

I am really excited about this affiliation with Barnes and Noble. I don't expect it to make me rich, but I hope that it furthers the purpose of this publication by encouraging visitors to learn beyond the confines of this growing reference tool. Go to the library, the museums, the Historic New Orleans Collection, to learn more about our culture.

Or buy a book through Barnes and Noble and help this site! We get a small percentage of every book purchase that is initiated from the encyclopedia. Simply use the easy-to-use form at the bottom of each page to look up a keyword, title or author, even if it has nothing to do with Louisiana.

In the future I hope to make it even easier by having direct links to new books about specific subjects or people in Louisiana history, side by side with links to further information within this site.

Clothing

Check out The Regency Fashon Page to discover the fashions that were prevalent late in the period of Spanish possession of Louisiana. While you are there let Cathy know what a great site she has put together.

Documents

The Documents Section will include treaties, letters and constitutions. Words and papers that have guided and beguiled the settlers and citizens of a land called Louisiana.

The first documents are the ones we see along side of the state’s highways.

In the future important documents will have annotations and links to events that created or were influenced by these words.

Maps

I have separated the Maps from the Places Section because it will be easier to maintain uniformity and quality of the maps. Future maps will show where armies marched, how the delta of a great river controlled land development and how to get to historical sites.

Mission Statement

No one will deny the usefulness of information or its ubiquitous and expanding, but elusive nature. The Internet provides mankind’s latest attempt to collect, sort, categorize and distribute this valuable commodity. However, the trends in this new resource tend toward commercial, personal, salacious, banal and useless (not even trivial) data. In this small dusty corner of the Internet I hope to buck this trend with information that is truly useful, interesting, and accountable, not to mention inspirational. This implies that the casual browser can be spurred to action and the serious researcher will find resources beyond this site through hypertext links and real world contacts provided by Encyclopedia Louisiana. Technically I hope to induce XML, PDF and future languages and formats to make the information easier to work. A server of its own would be nice. Legally, I hope to be vigilant in giving credit where it is due. An incorporation , whether non-profit or otherwise would be in order. Artistically, I want to provide designs that add to the enjoyment and usefulness of the site. Financially, I hope to find the means to perpetuate and expand the encyclopedia’s presence. I would also like to translate the archives in Seville that chronicle the government and daily life of Louisiana under Spain and the Notorial Archives here in New Orleans. The Historic New Orleans Collection and the Louisiana State Museum and the public libraries contain a wealth of information. My goal here is not to absorb all this information, but to draw others into these resources to check the history and culture out for themselves. For the short term I will continue to add information I have amassed and resources already available to me from the folks at HostNow. I will implement the affiliation I have begun with Barnes and Noble, Inc. and I will look forward to that day when I can do this full time.

Reference

I have enjoyed long hours at the Library and the Historic New Orleans Collection learning about many interesting events and people in our city's past. I know that there are stories to tell at the Amistad Research Center and the Notorial Archives. Although I have not yet included any sources, the books and documents that contain the original information cannot be replaced by hypertext and hopefully this reference will inspire the reader to seek the original itself.
